Affordable Mental Health Services at CHCs

With mental health issues on the rise, increased access to mental health support is more important than ever. However, many experiencing mental health needs are struggling to afford or access these essential services. Community Health Centers (CHCs) have stepped up to meet these needs, but what exactly do they offer, and why is mental health a growing topic of conversation?

The Increased Need for Mental Health Services

Many individuals of all ages and backgrounds need mental health services to address conditions like anxiety, depression, and various other mood disorders. As noted by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), in the United States, approximately one in five adults experiences a mental illness. NAMI also found that one in six US children (aged 6-17) experience a mental health disorder each year. When left untreated, mental health issues may lead to difficulties in personal relationships, work or school, and in completing daily tasks.

Despite this growing need, many individuals still face barriers to high-quality mental health care due to high costs, limited availability of providers, or having no insurance. Additionally, the stigma surrounding mental health may act as another barrier to these individuals receiving care.

With its increasing prevalence in our communities, greater access to quality mental health support is more crucial than ever. As such, more mental health professionals and other healthcare providers are working to increase patients’ access to affordable and accessible mental health services.

How CHCs Are Bridging the Gap for Mental Health Care in Communities

Mental health care is a community-wide need. Since Community Health Centers aim to meet the needs of their local communities, some centers provide essential mental health services. These may include mental health screenings, counseling, therapy sessions, and substance abuse treatment. These services are offered on a sliding fee scale based on income so that patients can receive mental health support regardless of their insurance coverage or financial status.

In addition to being cost-effective, CHCs are often located in areas with few affordable healthcare options. This ensures that quality mental health services are easily accessible to individuals in underserved rural and urban communities.

Who Can Receive Mental Health Care at a Health Center?

If your local Community Health Center offers mental health services, there is no limit to who can get support! This includes those who:

  • Have no insurance
  • Are underinsured
  • Have private insurance
  • Are on a low income
  • Are experiencing homelessness
  • Live in urban or rural areas

Likewise, your local Community Health Center accepts Medicaid, so those receiving Medicaid benefits can also get the mental health support they need.

Not every health center offers mental health services, so it is important to call first to determine if the staff at your nearest health center can meet your needs. If mental health services are not available, they may refer you to another facility that can provide the support you need.

What Other Health Components Do CHCs Address?

Health Components Addressed By Chcs

Your mental and physical health are connected. Conditions like chronic stress, anxiety, and depression can make physical health problems worse. For example, many mental health conditions can impact sleep, which may harm your physical health over time. As such, it is important to address both mental and physical needs to improve the overall health and well-being of each person.

Community Health Centers seek to address the root cause of health issues by providing comprehensive care focused on the whole person. With essential services like primary care, dental and vision services, nutritional counseling, and substance abuse treatment, health centers can help improve the physical and mental health of their patients.
